2009 NFL DRAFT - ROUND 1
Pick Team Projection Comment
1 Detroit

Stafford
QB
Georgia

Sorry Lion fans, I now have a bad feeling that Detroit will select Stafford.  And yes, the trade of Cutler to a team in their Division could be the tipping point.  After all, keeping up with the Joneses is a popular theme in the NFL.  Besides, all reports indicated that Stafford had a very good private workout with the Lions.  Unfortunately, even with the trade for Peterson, I believe the Lions should select Curry.  Why? When is the last time the Lions had a team identity generated from a major team strength; from a unit that could be classified as one of the best in the NFL?  Well, Peterson, Curry and Sims would give the team a tremendous team strength and place them in the conversation for best linebacking unit in the NFL.
Pick history:
02/12 = OLB Curry
02/28 = OLB Curry
03/10 = OLB Curry
03/22 = OLB Curry
04/04 = QB Stafford
04/18 = QB Stafford
2 St. Louis

Sanchez
QB
USC

Sorry Washington, Jets, et all; even with Stafford now off the board I believe the Rams will go quarterback.  Especially with Sanchez rising to the top spot for quarterbacks on some draft analysts' boards (including mine).  I know, I know, everyone has the Rams selecting an offensive tackle.  However, based on his performance last year, the Rams have to be at least a little concerned that Bulgar's skills are in decline.  Sanchez can come in and sit for a year or so behind Bulgar, or jump in if Bulgar continues to disappoint.
Pick history:
02/12 = QB Stafford
02/28 = QB Stafford
03/10 = QB Stafford
03/22 = QB Stafford
04/04 = QB Sanchez
04/18 = QB Sanchez
3 Kansas City

Orakpo
OLB/DE
Texas

The Chiefs' pick will be very interesting.  However, the team wants to play a 3-4 and Curry's spot in a 3-4 will, most likely, be inside.  Orakpo will play outside and will generate the sacks and pressures needed for a 3-4 defense to be successful.  I do not believe Hali is fast enough or athletic enough to play OLB in a 3-4 defense.  So unless the Chiefs feel confident that Curry can generate a consistent pass rush from the OLB position, I now look for Kansas City to draft Orakpo.
Pick history:
02/12 = DT Raji
02/28 = DT Raji
03/10 = DT Raji
03/22 = DT Raji
04/04 = OLB Curry
04/18 = OLB Orakpo
4 Seattle

J Smith
OT
Baylor

While Crabtree is not out of the question even with the Housh signing (or Curry of the draft falls like this), I'm sticking with Smith.  Having Walter Jones all these years has clearly showed the Seahawks how important a dominate left tackle is.  With Jones 35 and coming off a knee injury, Seattle decides to grab their left tackle of the future during a rare year where they have a top five pick.
Pick history:
02/12 = WR Crabtree
02/28 = WR Crabtree
03/10 = OT J Smith
03/22 = OT J Smith
04/04 = OT J Smith
04/18 = OT J Smith
5 Cleveland

Raji
DT
Boston Col

The Browns were hoping for Orakpo, and will consider Curry, but will ultimately come to the same conclusion as Kansas City, that my #1 player in the draft, Curry, is a difference-maker for a 4-3 defense, and just a very, very good player for a 3-4 defense.  The New England tree loves drafting athletic defensive tackles.  The Pats' ends, Seymour and Warren played tackle in college.  Raji fits the bill of a New England type lineman and the Browns scoop him up.
Pick history:
02/12 = OLB E Brown
02/28 = OLB Orakpo
03/10 = OLB Orakpo
03/22 = OLB Orakpo
04/04 = OLB Orakpo
04/18 = DT Raji
6 Cincinnati

Curry
OLB
Wake Forest

Orakpo is the player the Bengals need, but he is moving up my mock draft, not down to the Bengals.  The choice here will be Monroe or Curry.  If this scenario plays out, I look for the Bengals to do the right thing and grab Curry.  He will replace Jeanty in their starting lineup from day one, pairing with Rivers to give Cincinnati an impressive pair of bookend outside linebackers.
Pick history
02/12 = DE Orakpo
02/28 = OT J Smith
03/10 = OT Monroe
03/22 = OT Monroe
04/04 = OT Monroe
04/18 = OLB Curry
7 Oakland

Monroe
OT
Virginia

Al, draft a receiver.  I said Al, draft a receiver.  Well, when have you ever known Al Davis to listen to the masses.  However, with Monroe available, I wouldn't blame him a bit for moving off wide receiver and drafting the talented tackle.
Pick history
02/12 = OT Monroe
02/28 = WR Macklin
03/10 = WR Macklin
03/22 = WR Macklin
04/04 = WR Macklin
04/18 = OT Monroe
8 Jacksonville

Crabtree
WR
Texas Tech

I was going back and forth between offensive tackle A Smith and Crabtree and then Matt Jones did what he does best and made my projection easy.  Initially, I thought Jacksonville would go for a speed receiver later in the draft to pair with Jones, but now I believe they will go with the best receiver they can get.  Since my initial selection of Crabtree, the Jags have released Jones, so I am even more secure in my Crabtree projection.
Pick history
02/12 = OT J Smith
02/28 = OT Monroe
03/10 = WR Crabtree
03/22 = WR Crabtree
04/04 = WR Crabtree
04/18 = WR Crabtree
9 Green Bay

Jackson
DE
LSU

Well, it was fun (however briefly) while it lasted.  However, Raji is now gone.  Given that scenario, logic would dictate that I go back to a pass rushing OLB.  But, hmmm, I now think not.  There is very, very good depth at that spot in the draft so Green Bay can look for a pass-rushing OLB in round two.  However, it is rare that a stud, big defensive end who can be a force in the 3-4 playing the run, and get penetration against the pass and has first round talent comes around.  Jackson, however, is such a player.
Pick history
02/12 = OT A Smith
02/28 = OT A Smith
03/10 = OT A Smith
03/22 = OLB Maybin
04/04 = DT Raji
04/18 = DE Jackson
10 San Francisco

Maybin
OLB
Penn State

With Maybin available again I look for the 49ers to grab him, especially after his impressive Pro Day.  Offensive tackle A Smith is still a possibility at this spot. A few years ago, I thought the 49ers grabbed a dominate OLB pass rusher in Lawson but he hasn't been healthy, and was not a pass rushing force when healthy.
Pick history
02/12 = CB Jenkins
02/28 = OLB Maybin
03/10 = OLB Maybin
03/22 = OT A Smith
04/04 = OLB Maybin
04/18 = OLB Maybin
11 Buffalo

Ayers
DE
Tennessee

The trade of Peters will give the Bills pause at this spot for A Smith or Oher, but I believe they will stick to drafting a defensive end at this spot.  While drafting Ayers is a bit of a risk here because his value has skyrocketed during the post-season, the Bills are a team that takes risks in the draft (and now outside of the draft).  Ayers is a better fit at end as a three down player than Brown and he has moved ahead of Brown on my draft board.
Pick history
02/12 = WR Macklin
02/28 = DE Brown
03/10 = DE Brown
03/22 = DE Brown
04/04 = DE Ayers
04/18 = DE Ayers
12 Denver

Maualuga
ILB
USC

Maualuga may be moving down some draft boards, but he's not moving down mine.  Denver finally gets a dominate defensive player who will give the Bronco defense an identity.  Maualuga will be a force in the middle of the Broncos' defense for years to come.
Pick history
02/12 = ILB Maualuga
02/28 = ILB Maualuga
03/10 = ILB Maualuga
03/22 = ILB Maualuga
04/04 = ILB Maualuga
04/18 = ILB Maualuga
13 Washington

A Smith
OT
Alabama

The Redskins would like a pass rushing defensive end, and Everette Brown is now a possibility.  However, with Smith now available, and that is the direction I believe the Redskins will go.
Pick history
02/12 = OT Oher
02/28 = OT Oher
03/10 = OT Oher
03/22 = OT Oher
04/04 = OT A Smith
04/18 = OT A Smith
14 New Orleans

Cushing
OLB
USC

The Saints outside linebackers are steady, but they are replaceable.  Cushing will come in and start from day one.  The steroid rumors surrounding Cushing have been shot down so there is nothing stopping the Saints from taking him here.
Pick history
02/12 = OLB Cushing
02/28 = OLB Cushing
03/10 = OLB Cushing
03/22 = OLB Cushing
04/04 = OLB Cushing
04/18 = OLB Cushing
15 Houston

Butler
CB
Connecticut

Butler is moving up draft boards very quickly.  He ended my prospect analysis process as the top cornerback on my board.  I now look for the Texans to grab him at this spot.  Especially since Jenkins has speed concerns, and Davis has consistency corners.
02/12 = CB Davis
02/28 = CB Davis
03/10 = CB Davis
03/22 = CB Davis
04/04 = CB Davis
04/18 = CB Butler
16 San Diego

Oher
OT
Mississippi

Sproles is back, LT is back, but San Diego still needs a runner.  It just won't be in round one.  I now have the Chargers going with Oher, a player they are thrilled is still available, to help their offensive line.
Pick history
02/12 = RB Wells
02/28 = RB Moreno
03/10 = RB Moreno
03/22 = OT Britton
04/04 = OT Oher
04/18 = OT Oher
17 New York Jets

Macklin
WR
Missouri

Wow, are the Jets thrilled or what!  There is always a top player that falls because a team expected to draft at his position (in this case the Raiders) goes in another direction and his position doesn't match-up well with the teams that come up next.  In this mock draft the Jets are wax ecstatic as Macklin falls to them at #17 in round one.
Pick history
02/12 = CB Smith
02/28 = WR Heyward-Bey
03/10 = WR Heyward-Bey
03/22 = WR Heyward-Bey
04/04 = WR Heyward-Bey
04/18 = WR Macklin
18 Denver

Brown
DE/OLB
Florida State

Some will project Jerry here, but he is a better fit inside in a 4-3 front.  So I have the Broncos going with Brown to play OLB in their new 3-4 defense.  That is currently a very weak position for the Broncos.
PRIOR SELECTIONS:
Maualuga ILB

Pick history
04/04 = DE Jackson
04/18 = OLB E Brown
19 Tampa Bay

Jerry
DT
Mississippi

This is a tough spot to predict because the Bucs could go in a few different directions.  They could go QB with Freeman depending on how they like him and their thoughts on Jackson (I player I like a lot), or they could go LB with Matthews.  However, with the loss of Haye the Bucs badly need a penetrating defensive tackle and that is precisely what Jerry is, so he is now my projection for the Bucs.
Pick history
02/12 = DT Jerry
02/28 = OLB Matthews
03/10 = QB Sanchez
03/22 = QB Sanchez
04/04 = DT Jerry
04/18 = DT Jerry
20 Detroit

Beatty
OT
Connecticut

Following Atlanta's lead of last year, the Lions now grab a left tackle.  Their selection will come down to Britton or Beatty.  I have Beatty rated more highly, hopefully the Lions do as well.  Beatty has tremendous upside.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Stafford QB
Pick history
02/12 = QB Sanchez
02/28 = QB Sanchez
03/10 = OT Beatty
03/22 = OT Beatty
04/04 = OT Beatty
04/18 = OT Beatty
21 Philadelphia

Wells
RB
Ohio State

The buzz around Philly is that they like Moreno.  However, Wells is a big back with speed who will be a nice compliment to, and eventual replacement for Westbrook.  If the Eagles go Moreno over Wells it will be a mistake.
02/12 = OT Beatty
02/28 = OT Beatty
03/10 = OT Britton
03/22 = RB Wells
04/04 = RB Wells
04/18 = RB Wells
22 Minnesota

Britton
OT
Azizona

With Britton now available, the Vikings grab him to challenge and hopefully start at right tackle.  Harvin may have "smoked" his way out of this spot.
Pick history
02/12 = WR Heyward-Bey
02/28 = OT Britton
03/10 = WR Harvin
03/22 = WR Harvin
04/04 = OT Britton
04/18 = OT Britton
23 New England

Barwin
OLB/DE/TE
Missouri

I'm sure some heads shook back on 2/28 when I first had Barwin being drafted in round one by the Pats.  However, his value keeps going up.  The Pats draft the next Mike Vrabel.  Barwin blew up the Combine and got better on his Pro Day.  He is a great athlete and can replace Vrabel both on defense and offense.
Pick history
02/12 = OLB Maybin
02/28 = OLB+ Barwin
03/10 = OLB+ Barwin
03/22 = OLB+ Barwin
04/04 = OLB+ Barwin
04/18 = OLB+ Barwin
24 Atlanta

Matthews
OLB
USC

While Pettigrew still makes sense, Matthews is too good to pass up and completes a rebuilt linebacking corps with Matthews at SAM, Peterson at WILL and Lofton returning to MIKE.
Pick history
02/12 = TE Pettigrew
02/28 = TE Pettigrew
03/10 = OLB Matthews
03/22 = OLB Matthews
04/04 = OLB Matthews
04/18 = OLB Matthews
25 Miami

A Smith
CB
Wake Forest

Nicks will be tempting, but cornerback is a major area of need and Smith is a very good player.  Smith is a playmaking corner who will be a steal in the draft.
Pick history
02/12 = ILB Laurinaitis
02/28 = CB Smith
03/10 = CB Smith
03/22 = CB Smith
04/04 = CB Smith
04/18 = CB Smith
26 Baltimore

Heyward-Bey
WR
Maryland

With a quarterback with an arm as big as Flacco's arm, adding Heyward-Bey is just plain frightening.  Heyward-Bey has good size and can fly.  Bombs away!
Pick history
02/12 = WR Harvin
02/28 = WR Harvin
03/10 = TE Pettigrew
03/22 = DE Jackson
04/04 = OLB E Brown
04/18 = WR Heyward-Bey
27 Indianapolis

Harvin
WR
Florida

With Harvin still available, I can't see the Colts passing on giving Manning a game-breaking weapon to replace Harrison.  The Colts have the veteran players and sound organization to keep Harvin in check.  At least they I (and they) hope so.
Pick history
02/12 = DT Brace
02/28 = DT Jerry
03/10 = DT Jerry
03/22 = DT Jerry
04/04 = WR Harvin
04/18 = WR Harvin
28 Buffalo

Pettigrew
TE
Oklahoma St

Owens needs his Witten!  Pettigrew is a good blocker and reliable receiver, but don't expect Witten-like performances.  He lacks the speed to be a top-tier receiving tight end.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Ayers DE
Pick history
04/18 = TE Pettigrew
29 New York Giants

Robiskie
WR
Ohio State

While Nicks is still available, I just get the feeling that Robiskie is their guy.  The Giants need at receiver is immediate and Robiskie is one of the most NFL-ready receivers in the draft.  He is also taller than Nicks.  So the Giants opt for a sure thing with a lower ceiling over the potential of Nicks.
Pick history
02/12 = WR Williams
02/28 = DT Hood
03/10 = WR Robiskie
03/22 = WR Robiskie
04/04 = WR Robiskie
04/18 = WR Robiskie
30 Tennessee

Davis
CB
Illinois

While the Titans' need an end to replace Kearse sooner rather than later, instead of reaching at this spot, I now have them grabbing the sliding Vontae Davis who they can groom behind Harper and Finnegan.
Pick history
02/12 = DE Ayers
02/28 = DE Ayers
03/10 = DE Ayers
03/22 = DE Ayers
04/04 = DE Kruger
04/18 = CB Davis
31 Arizona

Brown
RB
Connecticut

James will be released and Hightower is not a back to build a team around.  In a surprise (to some) move, the Cards choose Brown over Moreno to become their featured back.
Pick history
02/12 = RB Moreno
02/28 = RB Brown
03/10 = RB Brown
03/22 = RB Brown
04/04 = RB Brown
04/18 = RB Brown
32 Pittsburgh

Jenkins
CB
Ohio State

The Steelers lost McFadden in free agency and since Smith didn't work out as the long term free safety (he's gone now too), Jenkins can come in, and short term play in the nickel and long term settle in as Clark's replacement at free safety.
Pick history
02/12 = OT Britton
02/28 = DE Jackson
03/10 = DE Jackson
03/22 = CB Jenkins
04/04 = CB Jenkins
04/18 = CB Jenkins

2009 NFL DRAFT - ROUND 2
Pick Team Projection Comment
33 Detroit

Hood
DT
Missouri

Redding was traded to Seattle so a new starter is needed. Jackson is a big body who can be used in spots, but the Lions need a defensive tackle who can be a continual disruptive force.  Hood is very strong, fast, quick and athletic for his size.  He can play the run and is a good inside pass rusher.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Stafford QB, Beatty OT
Pick history
sorry, accidently erased
04/04 = DT Hood
04/18 = DT Hood
34 New England

Laurinaitis
ILB
Ohio State

With the signing of Springs and Bodden, I no longer project a corner at this spot.  Laurinaitis is the choice to split time and eventually replace Bruschi.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Barwin OLB+
Pick history
02/12 = DE Jackson (for KC)
02/28 = CB Butler
03/10 = CB Butler
03/22 = ILB Laurinaitis
04/04 = ILB Laurinaitis
04/18 = ILB Laurinaitis
35 St. Louis

Meredith
OT
South Car

With Pace gone, the Rams plan to move Barron to left tackle.  Worst case Meredith starts on the right side.  However, it wouldn't surprise me if he is the better left tackle keeping Barron at right tackle.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Sanchez QB
Pick history
02/12 = OC Mack
02/28 = ILB Laurinaitis
03/10 = OT Meredith
03/22 = OT Loadholt
04/04 = OT Loadholt
04/18 = OT Meredith
36 Cleveland

Moreno
RB
Georgia

Cleveland is very happy that Moreno drops to them at the top of round two.  The mileage on Lewis is starting to mount up and Moreno comes in as his heir apparent.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Raji DT
Pick history
02/12 = RB McCoy
02/28 = CB Jenkins
03/10 = CB Jenkins
03/22 = RB Moreno
04/04 = RB Moreno
04/18 = RB Moreno
37 Seattle

Delmas
FS/SS
Western Mich

Cornerback Sean Smith is a possibility, however, Delmas makes a bit more sense.  He can step in for Russell who is solid but not a difference-maker at free safety.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: J Smith OT
Pick history
02/12 = CB S Smith
02/28 = FS Delmas
03/10 = FS Delmas
03/22 = FS Delmas
04/04 = FS Delmas
04/18 = FS Delmas
38 Cincinnati

Unger
C
Oregon

The Bengals need to rebuild their line and start by grabbing the top center on many draft analysts' boards.  With big, strong nose tackles in Pittsburgh and Baltimore, a top center is a must in the AFC North.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Curry OLB
Pick history
02/12 = RB Brown
02/28 = DE Kruger
03/10 = DE Kruger
03/22 = DE Kruger
04/22 = OC Unger
04/18 = OC Unger
39 Jacksonville

Freeman
QB
Kansas State

The Jaguars have been all around the quarterback discussions this offseason so if Freeman falls to this spot, as I project, I believe the Jags will pull the trigger and draft him.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Crabtree WR
Pick history
02/12 = WR Iglesias
02/28 = WR Iglesias
03/10 = DT Brace
03/22 = DT Brace
04/04 = QB Freeman
04/18 = QB Freeman
40 Oakland

Mack

The Raiders lost Grove to the Dolphins.  Mack is drafted to start right away.
PRIOR SELECTIONS:

02/12 = WR Robiskie
02/28 = OT Loadholt
03/10 = OT Loadholt
03/22 = OC Mack
04/04 = OC Mack
04/18 = OC Mack
41 Green Bay

English
OLB
North Illinois

With the switch to a 3-4 Green Bay adds a player to start at OLB opposite Kampman.  English is a good pass rusher.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Jackson DE
Pick history
02/12 = OLB English
02/28 = DT Brace
03/10 = OLB English
03/22 = DE Gilbert
04/04 = OLB English
04/18 = OLB English
42 Buffalo

Urbik
OG
Wisconsin

Urbik is a player I like more than most.  He is my top rated guard in the draft, a position of need for the Bills.  Urbik is the kind of player you plug into your starting lineup and plays at a high level for 10 years, while peaking as a Pro Bowl alternate.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Ayers DE, Pettigrew TE
Pick history
02/12 = DE/TE Barwin
02/28 = WR Robiskie
03/10 = OG Urbik
03/22 = OG Urbik
04/04 = OG Urbik
04/18 = OG Urbik
43 San Francisco

Loadholt
OT
Oklahoma

The 49ers signed Marvel Smith but need a young tackle.  Loadholt is a big-bodied right tackle who will fit nicely in in the run-first offense that Singletary wants to employ.
PRIOR SELECTIONS:
Maybin OLB
Pick history
02/12 = FS/SS Delmas
02/28 = CB Moore
03/10 = CB Moore
03/22 = CB Butler
04/04 = CB Butler
04/18 = OT Loadholt
44 Miami

Nicks
WR
N Carolina

With Nicks dropping to round two, the Dolphins get a steal.  Nicks is a reliable receiver who gets open and makes catches.  He will make a nice tandem with Ginn Jr.  Camarillo and Bess are better as backups.
PRIOR SELECTIONS:
A Smith CB
Pick history
02/12 = OT Loadholt
02/28 = WR Britt
03/10 = WR Britt
03/22 = WR Britt
04/04 = WR Nicks
04/18 = WR Nicks
45 New York Giants

Wood
C/OG
Louisville

Wood is perfect for the Giants who need depth on their offensive line since he can play anywhere along the line except left tackle.  Down the line he will be their starting center.
PRIOR SELECTIONS:
Robiskie WR
Pick history
02/12 = OC/OG Wood
02/28 = WR Williams
03/10 = OC/OG Wood
03/22 = OC/OG Wood
04/04 = OC/OG Wood
04/18 = OC/OG Wood
46 Houston

A Brown
RB
N C State

Houston has been talking-up Barber so while I believe Chung would be a great pick, I think the Texans will wait until later in the draft to select a player to compete with him.  So now I have them drafting Brown to be the big-back in a tandem with Slaton.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Butler CB

04/04 = TE Pettigrew
04/18 = DE Sidbury Jr.
53 New York Jets

King
DE/DT
Iowa

King is an undersized defensive tackle who I believe will be a very good 3-4 end.  He hustles and makes tackles all over the field.
PRIOR SELECTIONS:
Macklin WR
Pick history
02/12 = OLB/ILB McKenzie
02/28 = DE King
03/10 = DE King
03/22 = DE King
04/04 = DE King
04/18 = DE King
54 Minnesota

Massaquoi
WR
Georgia

Massaquoi is a receiver with good size who showed much better hands in the post-season than he did at times at Georgia.  I like his potential more than Rice.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Britton OT
Pick history
02/12 = OC Unger
02/28 = OC Mack
03/10 = OC Mack
03/22 = OC Unger
04/04 = WR Massaquoi
04/18 = WR Massaquoi
55 Atlanta

Johnson
DE
Georgia Tech

The trade for Gonzalez eliminates the need for Nelson.  Meanwhile, at defensive end Anderson is very solid against the run but hasn't developed into a pass rusher.  Johnson has great athletic ability and good upside as a pass rusher.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Matthews OLB
Pick history
02/12 = OLB Matthews
02/28 = OLB Freeman
03/10 = TE Nelson
03/22 = TE Nelson
04/04 = TE Nelson
04/18 = TE Nelson
56 Miami

Brinkley
ILB
South Car

This was my one oversight in the past few drafts.  I forgot the Dolphins signed Grove.  I now have Miami grabbing Brinkley, a perfect fit as a 3-4 inside linebacker, and a Parcells-type of linebacker with good size and athleticism.  When this happens, the Ravens, who pick next, will be crushed.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: A Smith CB, Nicks WR
Pick history
02/12 = WR Britt
02/28 = OC Wood
03/10 = OC Unger
03/22 = OC Luigs
04/04 = ILB Brinkley
04/18 = ILB Brinkley
57 Baltimore

Sintim
OLB
Virginia

Sintim appears to be a player on the rise, although not on my board.  However, he has experience playing outside in a 3-4 and could give Johnson a run for his money as a starter in the Ravens' 3-4 defense.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Heyward-Bey WR
Pick history
02/12 = ILB Beckwith
02/28 = ILB Brinkley
03/10 = ILB Laurinaitis
03/22 = ILB Brinkley

03/10 = FS Moore
03/22 = FS Moore

59 Carolina

Nelson
TE
Southern Miss

Carolina benefits from Divisional rival Atlanta's trade for Tony Gonzalez.  Suddenly, Nelson, my top rated tight end falls to them here.  Nelson is a tight end who can stretch the field.  He is perfect to take advantage of the attention opposing defenses pay to Steve Smith.  He had a great week at the Senior Bowl.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: None
Pick history
02/12 = TE Nelson
02/28 = TE Cook
03/10 = TE Cook
03/22 = TE Cook
04/04 = TE Cook
04/18 = TE Cook
60 New York Giants

Beckwith
ILB
LSU

Just a hunch that the G-men will be looking for Pierce's eventual replacement.  Beckwith is good enough to make that happen as early as 2010.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Robiskie WR, Wood OL
Pick history
02/12 = DT Hood
02/28 = OC Unger
03/10 = RB McCoy
03/22 = ILB Beckwith
04/04 = ILB Beckwith
04/18 = ILB Beckwith
61 Indianapolis

Miller
DT
Texas

Just a hunch.  Miller is faster than Moala (and the Colts like speed on defense), a very strong kid and a prospect who will give the them a presence against the run in the middle of their line.  This may be a reach for some, but not for me, and I believe, not for the Colts.
PRIOR SELECTIONS:
Harvin WR
Pick history
02/12 = CB Butler
02/28 = OLB McKenzie
03/10 = OLB McKenzie
03/22 = OLB McKenzie

03/10 = DT Moala
03/22 = DT Moala
04/04 = DT Moala
04/18 = DE Kruger
63 Arizona

White
QB+
West Virginia

Adding White to this team send shivers down my spine.  He is the perfect player to run the wildcat since he can throw and run.  With the receivers on this team and White's ability, this wrinkle would be hard to defense.  Long term, White will also be a solid backup quarterback for Leinart.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: D Brown RB
Pick history
02/12 = QB+ White
02/28 = QB+ White
03/10 = QB+ White
03/22 = QB+ White
04/04 = QB+ White
04/18 = QB+ White
64 Pittsburgh

Thomas
WR
Arizona

With Washington leaving in free agency, Thomas, a fast, quick, athletic receiver and return man makes sense.  He can return kicks and punts and challenge for playing time in 3 and 4 wide receiver sets.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Jenkins DB
Pick history
02/12 = DT/DE Marks
02/28 = WR Thomas
03/10 = WR Thomas

2009 NFL DRAFT - ROUND 3
Pick Team Projection Comment
65 Detroit

Phillips
ILB
TCU

Phillips is an athletic, fast inside linebacker that fits the 4-3 defense more than the 3-4.  He should start right away.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Stafford QB, Beatty OT, Hood DT
Pick history
04/04 = ILB Phillips
04/18 = ILB Phillips
66 St. Louis

McKillop
ILB
Pittsburgh

I have McKillop rated more highly than many, so McBath or Ellerbe could go at this spot, but I'll stay with McKillop who will allow the Rams to move Witherspoon back outside to WILL where he is more effective.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Sanchez QB, Meredith OT
Pick history
04/04=McKillop
04/18 = ILB McKillop
67 Kansas City

Greene
RB
Iowa

Yes, Greene is drafted ahead of McCoy.  The Chiefs have a speed back in Charles, Greene is the physical back to pair with him after the Chiefs wave bye-bye to Larry Johnson.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Orakpo LB
Pick history
04/04 = RB A Brown
04/18 = RB Greene
68 Seattle

S Smith
CB
Utah

Seattle has capable corners but they are short.  Smith is over 6'3" so he can match up with the bigger receivers in the league.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: J Smith OT, Delmas FS
Pick history
04/04 = RB McCoy
04/18 = CB S Smith
69 Dallas

Wallace
WR
Mississippi

I know the Boys like Austin, but come on, he's untested and has been banged up, a lot.  Wallace has tremendous speed and showed reliable hands during the post season.  He is a good fit opposite Roy Williams long term.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Vaughn SS
Pick history
04/04 = WR Wallace
04/18 = WR Wallace
70 Cincinnati

Veikune
DE
Hawaii

The Bengals need a pass rusher and Veikune, one of my favorite players in the draft can get after the quarterback.  He also has the strength to be a three down end.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Curry OLB, Unger OC
Pick history
04/04 = DE Johnson
04/18 = DE Johnson
71 Oakland

Knox
WR
Abil Christian

Knox is an Al Davis player if there ever was one.  The kid can fly and showed good hands during post-season workouts.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Monroe OT, Mack OC
Pick history
04/04 = SS Greene
04/18 = WR Knox
72 Jacksonville

Moala
DT
USC

This pick could come down to running back and defensive tackle.  With more depth at running back, I look for Jacksonville to grab Moala to try to plug the hole left with Stroud plying his trade in Buffalo.
PRIOR SELECTIONS:
Crabtree WR, Freeman QB
Pick history
04/04 = RB Jennings
04/18 = DT Moala
73 Green Bay

Scott
DT
Clemson

Scott is a big, strong kid who can play the nose in the Packers' new 3-4 scheme.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Jackson DE, English OLB
Pick history
04/04 = DE McGee
04/18 = DT Scott
74 San Francisco

Jennings
RB
Liberty

Yet another running back drafted ahead of McCoy.  Jennings is a, big, strong back with good speed and power.
PRIOR SELECTIONS:
Maybin OLB, Loadholdt OT
Pick history
04/04 = RB Greene
04/18 = RB Jennings
75 Buffalo

Freeman
OLB
Ohio State

This could be one of the steals of the draft.  Freeman is one of the best WILLs available.  He will start from day one and be one of the most productive players to come out of this draft.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Ayers DE, Pettigrew TE, Urbik OG
Pick history
04/04 = TE Coffman
04/18 = OLB Freeman
76 New York Jets

Fulton
OT
Illinois

Fulton is an athletic tackle who could start on  the right side for the Jets from day one.
PRIOR SELECTIONS:
Macklin WR, King DE
Pick history
04/04 = OT Fulton
04/18 = OT Fulton
77 Houston

McCoy
RB
Pittsburgh

Finally, McCoy is drafted.  He will be Slaton's backup at Houston.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Davis CB, Chung SS

Pick history
04/04 = RB Goodson
04/18 = RB McCoy
78 San Diego

Ringer
RB
Michigan St

I've changed my mind at this spot.  Ringer is a very underrated back in this draft and San Diego has an excellent history of drafting backs who become very good NFL players.  Ringer becomes the future feature back in San Diego, possibly as early as 2010.
PRIOR SELECTIONS:
Oher OT
Pick history
04/04 = LB McKenzie
04/18 = RB Ringer
79 Denver

McGee
DE/DT
Purdue

The Broncos continue to revamp their defense drafting McGee, who has the size and athleticism to be a solid 3-4 end.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Maualuga ILB, Brown OLB DE, Brace DT
Pick history
04/04 = RB Ringer
04/18 = DE McGee
80 Washington

Goodson
RB
Texas A&M

Wow, a trade of Gonzalez to Atlanta and now Veikune is gone.  He would have been a great get by Washington.  So now I have Washington drafting Goodson to give Washington what Portis used to give them, a big-play running back.  Goodson will start off as a change-of-pace and third-down back. However, he has the skills tro be a featured back down the line.
PRIOR SELECTIONS:
A Smith OT
Pick history
04/04 = DE Veikune
04/18 = DE Veikune
81 Tampa Bay

Williams
WR
Penn State

Williams immediately becomes the second best receiver on the Bucs.  He is a steal at this spot in the draft.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Jerry DT
Pick history
04/04 = WR Williams
04/18 = WR Williams
82 Detroit

Scott
RB
Abil Christian

I'm not entirely sold on Kevin Smith, so I'm sure Detroit isn't either. Scott is an amazing athlete who was fantastic in college and played very well in the Texas vs. the Nation All Star Game.  I like the kid's potential far more than I like Smith's potential.  However, he has some off the field concerns.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Stafford QB, Beatty OT, Hood DT, Phillips ILB
Pick history
04/04 = RB Scott
04/18 = RB Scott
83 Green Bay

Cook
TE
South Car

Just what Green Bay needed, another offensive weapon.  I am not a big fan of Finley and Lee seems to have peaked.  Cook is a fast, athletic tight end who can get deep.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Jackson DE, English OLB, Scott DT
Pick history
04/04 - TE Casey
84 Denver

N Brown
QB
Cent Arkansas

This is a total hunch (and placed in round three of my mock since it is my last round; however, while I think the Broncos will draft Brown it will probably be in round five).  Brown is a smart quarterback who just gets things done on the field.  The kid takes coaching very well, is accurate and is a winner.  He will come in as a number three, and long term could be a backup or more.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Maualuga ILB, Brown OLB DE, Brace DT, McGee DE
Pick history
04/18 = QB N Brown
85 Philadelphia

Coffman
TE
Missouri

Philly needs a backup tight end.  McNabb will love throwing to the over 6'5" Coffman.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Wells RB, Sidbury Jr DE
Pick history
04/04 = CB S Smith
04/18 = TE Coffman
86 Minnesota

Luigs
OC
Arkansas

The Vikings need a center and Luigs is a solid prospect.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Britton OT, Massaquoi WR

Pick history
04/04 = OT Bell
04/18 = OC Luigs
87 Miami

Brown
OLB
Connecticut

With the free agent signing of Wake formerly of Penn State and the CFL, the Fins can let Brown and Wake duke it out for a role spelling Porter and Roth in the base offense.  The winner could also be Porter's heir apparent.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: A Smith CB, Nicks WR, Brinkley ILB
Pick history
04/04 = OLB Sintim
04/18 = OLB C Brown
88 Baltimore

McKenzie
OLB/ILB

PRIOR SELECTIONS: Heyward-Bey WR, Sintim OLB
Pick history
04/04 = WR Knox
04/18 = OLB McKenzie
89 New England

Vollmer
OT
Houston

Vollmer can sit for a year or two before joining the starting line-up.  He's big, strong and athletic for his size.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Barwin OLB+, Laurinaitis
ILB, Gilbert DE, Moore FS
Pick history
04/04 = OT Vollmer
04/18 = RB Goodson
90 Atlanta

Hamlin
SS
Clemson

This could come down to Hamlin or Greene (from Rutgers) to replace Milloy ir a corner such as Macho Harris.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Matthews OLB, Johnson DE
Pick history
04/04 = CB Harris
04/18 = SS Hamlin
91 New York Giants

Ingram
TE
Florida

The Giants need depth at tight end behind Boss.  Long term, Ingram could challenge Boss for the starting job.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Robiskie WR, Wood OL, Beckwith ILB
Pick history
04/04 = TE Ingram
04/18 = TE Ingram
92 Indianapolis

J Williams
OLB
Western ILL

The Colts are looking for an upgrade at outside linebacker.  Williams was a small school star who more than held his own at the East West Shrine Game.  His Pro Day was also top notch and he is a player on the rise.  He will come in and eventually be the Bucs' starting WILL.
PRIOR SELECTIONS:
Harvin WR, Miller DT
Pick history
04/04 = OLB Williams
04/18 = OLB Williams
93 Carolina

Moore
DE
USC

If Peppers leaves or holds out, the Panthers will need a defensive end.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Nelson TE
Pick history
04/04 = DE Sidbury Jr.
04/18 = DE Moore
94 Tennessee

Mitchell
DT
East Carolina

Mitchell is a big strong defensive tackle who will help fill the hole created with Haynesworth leaving in free agency.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Davis CB Kruger DE

Pick history
04/04 = CB Lewis
04/18 = DT Mitchell
95 Arizona

Casey
TE
Rice

The Cards add Casey to their mix at tight end.  He has incredible hands.  Beckham is also a possibility.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: D Brown RB, White QB+
Pick history
04/04 = TE Beckham
04/18 = TE Beckham
96 Pittsburgh

Marks
DT
Auburn

Marks adds a big body to the Steelers' mix along their defensive line.  He needs some work in the weight room but could backup all three spots.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Jenkins DB, Thomas WR
Pick history
04/04 = DT Scott
04/18 = DT Scott
97 New England

M Harris
CB
Virginia Tech

While the Pats added corners in last year's draft and free agency, none of the players added can grow into a number one corner.  And while Harris doesn't have top measureables, he has the confidence and football savvy to grow into a top corner.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Barwin OLB+, Laurinaitis
ILB, Gilbert DE, Moore FS, Vollmer OT
Pick history
04/04 = DE Moore
04/18 = OT Vollmer
98 Cincinnati

Bell
OT
Furman

Bell is an intriguing prospect who has a chance to develop into a very good player.  He has quick feet.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Curry OLB, Unger OC, Veikune DE
Pick history
04/04 = CB Moore
04/18 = OT Bell
99 Chicago

H Johnson
OG
LSU

Johnson is one of the biggest players in the draft.  Initially, he will back up at guard and right tackle.  Down the line he could be a very good starter.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Britt WR
Pick history
04/04 = OG Johnson
04/18 = OG Johnson
100 New York Giants

I Johnson
RB
Boise State

One of departed running back Ward's best qualities was his ability as a receiver.  Bradshaw and Ware are not in his class.  However, Ian Johnson is.  In fact, he could give Bradshaw a run for his money as Jacobs' primary backup.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Robiskie WR, Wood OL, Beckwith ILB, Ingram TE
Pick history
04/04 = RB I Johnson
04/18 = RB I Johnson
